THE LEGEND OF COLE MOUNTAIN BARBECUE

It is fairly acknowledged piece of history that the Colt 45 and the Remington rifle were responsible
for settling the West. Both of them were used extensively to ward off hostile Indians and for
the shooting of the wild game that was so prolific and necessary for survival.

Legend has it that there was a wonderful shot by the name of Mr. Cole who could shoot the eyes
off the bottom of a bottle when it was tossed in the air. Now this wasn't any ordinary feat because
he shot through the mouth of the bottle and the bottom was separated from the remainder of the
bottle.

Mr. Cole, as he was called respectfully because of his prowess with weapons, was a gun collector.
He lived in a cave in the side of a mountain that he had built his log cabin around, this serve
several purposes. It was cool enough in the rear portions of the cave that he could preserve some
game he had shot for a long time. The cave also served as a sort of bathroom because it had
running water. Also, the cave would serve as a hideout if the Indians ever got lucky to burn down
his cabin.

Now, Mr. Cole was one of those people who like to invent food things to eat. Buffalo, elk, wild
javelina, mule deer, bear, grouse, antelope, rabbits, raccoons, possums and other game soon began
to taste very similar, so Mr. Cole decided to do something about this situation. He set out to
concoct the best barbecue sauce in the world. This he accomplished over several years of trial and
error. This recipe was lost to the rest of the world until Rob Gates discovered it while out hunting
in Colorado, Rob discovered the cave where Mr. Cole had hidden the recipe in an old leather boot.

Upon reaching civilization, Rob made the sauce and served it to his friends, family, and neighbors.
They, in turn, asked for more and so this wonderful sauce was put into production so the rest of
those who are interested in true, authentic foods could also enjoy it. Being a sentimental person,
Rob has named the sauce after the inventor, Mr. Cole. And, since he found it in the side of the
mountain, it is called Cole Mountain Barbecue Sauce.

We hope you enjoy this fabulous sauce as much as the history behind it. Just be careful and don't
gut none on your forehead, or just
might beat your brains out trying to lick it off.
